The first study of Living and Knowing, Overlapping Cross Sections of Two Cities, 2022 was made through communication with people that I encountered at ZK/U in Berlin. Its name meaning ‘Center for Art and Urbanistics (Zentrum für Kunst und Urbanistik)’, ZK/U has done consistent experiments on urban research and community building.
During one month staying at Berlin, I wanted to know about issues related to material culture of the Holocaust. And I could barely understand the geography of administrative matters and decision-making structures in urban planning and space reproduction process, tourism and consumerism tendencies, mentality of Berliners toward memorials which they encounters everyday, and Holocaust education in classroom.
My research was done mostly in a shared kitchen at ZK/U. Not only with artists in the residency program but sometimes also with staff preparing meals, sharing food and interests was an exciting experience indeed. Encountering and conversations that were generated every day, made us overlap the different cities each of us comes from and created unexpected connections. From this, I could imagine Overlapping Cross Sections of Two Cities and met dedicated people who participated in this project. Unfortunately, I was not able to run all those inspiring talks in this one, but as we are in touch, I believe follow-up research and new projects can continue.
